Since Ireland in 2018 became the first country to say it would divest entirely from fossil fuels, governments, activists, and agencies worldwide have begun reciting the same rallying cry: ban all financing on hydrocarbons development and production.

After three days in Glasgow for COP26, you can’t help but ask yourself where do we go from here as an African energy sector. I maintain my disappointment with the global elites for failing to invite the oil and gas industry. Oh well, they invited me.

As we approach the end of 2021 and COP26, the African oil and gas industry is in a precarious position.  

Ahead of the global climate conference in Glasgow, Uganda’s President Yoweri K. Museveni wrote in an October 25 Wall Street Journal editorial that Africa cannot sacrifice its future prosperity for Western climate goals.

Last year marked the 25th anniversary since the execution of the ‘Ogoni Nine’, the group of activists led by Ken Saro Wiwa, that campaigned against environmental pollution, the exploitation of natural resources and the lack of development in the Niger Delta.

Published in the African Energy Chamber’s annual outlook, State of African Energy 2022, the list draws attention to the individuals who are expected to shape Africa’s energy sector in 2022 and beyond.

Giving indigenous companies a chance to step up their game in the African energy market is critical. For years, the leaders of the African Energy Chamber have been calling for this and working to give local companies every opportunity to participate in and prosper in the oil and gas industry.

By bringing attention to the individuals driving Africa’s energy growth, the recently launched ‘State of African Energy 2022 Outlook’ aims to highlight the expectations for 2022 across the continent.

Launched in a webinar led by Executive Chairman NJ Ayuk, the report outlines the forces shaping Africa’s energy sector, providing valuable insight into actionable solutions, investment trends and opportunities, as well as key focus areas for 2022 and beyond.

The report is the result of strong regional and international cooperation between the African Energy Chamber, governments, and other major public and private sector stakeholders across Africa.
