As the Business Line Job Delivery Lead at SLB, Akude plays an instrumental role in streamlining innovation, sustainability and inclusivity.
Could you provide a brief overview of your journey in the energy industry that led to your current role? What are some key achievements or milestones that you are particularly proud of?
I began my journey in the energy industry in December 2013 when I joined SLB as a Field Engineer based in Takoradi, Ghana. In this role, I gained extensive hands-on experience in offshore deep and ultra-deepwater operations, working with a wide range of advanced drilling and measurement tools. Over the next few years, I honed my technical skills across several high-profile projects in Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Gabon and Angola, which included exploration, appraisal and development wells. By September 2019, I had advanced to the role of Senior Field Engineer, taking on increased responsibilities, including leading teams in offshore projects and deploying cutting-edge SLB Transition technologies in the region.
In July 2023, I transitioned from field operations to management as the Business Line Job Delivery Lead in Sub-Saharan Africa, where I currently manage operations for major clients like Tullow, ENI, Trident and Marathon Equatorial Guinea. Throughout my career, I have been recognized for my contributions to innovative projects, including winning a bronze award for Performed by SLB in delivering Africa’s First Net Zero Development in 2022. Transitioning from a field engineer to managing complex offshore projects has allowed me to develop strong leadership skills, particularly in navigating customer demands and streamlining operations for efficiency.

Throughout my journey in the energy sector, I’ve encountered several challenges, some of which are deeply tied to the demanding nature of field operations. Early in my career as a field engineer, I had to quickly adapt to an often fast-paced and high-pressure work environment, which required not only technical expertise but also mental resilience. Managing field operations under harsh conditions, dealing with logistical hurdles and ensuring safety, all while maintaining service quality.
Additionally, gaining the respect of my male peers and colleagues was another obstacle I faced. The energy sector, traditionally male-dominated, required me to consistently prove my competence, knowledge and ability to perform under pressure. Over time, I’ve come to see these experiences as valuable lessons in leadership, adaptability, and communication. Transitioning from a field role to operations management was challenging, particularly in adapting to the new responsibilities of handling demanding customers. I had to quickly learn how to effectively communicate and build trust with clients, which I achieved by being honest and transparent in all interactions. Overcoming these challenges has been instrumental in my growth as a leader, teaching me how to navigate tough conversations and develop solutions that benefit everyone involved.
Quels conseils donneriez-vous aux jeunes femmes qui aspirent à exceller dans le secteur de l'énergie ? Y a-t-il des stratégies ou des mentalités spécifiques qui vous ont aidée à surmonter les obstacles et à atteindre votre position actuelle ?
I’ve had the privilege of mentoring and training over 20 engineers, helping them develop their skills and improve their competency in formation evaluation technologies. In my current role, I also focus on supporting the growth and performance of my team members, encouraging continuous learning and operational excellence. For young women aspiring to excel, resilience and a mindset of continuous learning are crucial. Continuous learning helps build a strong technical foundation, while seeking mentors and honing communication skills are essential for growth. Embracing challenges and staying persistent, even in the face of setbacks, has been a key mindset that has contributed to my success and can do the same for them.

A typical day in my life starts at 4:30 am with morning prayers, setting the tone for the day. I begin by reviewing my calendar, preparing for upcoming meetings, and organizing the tasks ahead. Next, I assess the ongoing rig operations and discuss key updates with my team. Once I’m ready for work, my mornings are largely dedicated to client meetings, where I engage with all the clients I oversee. Following this, I meet with my technicians and logistics team to ensure smooth coordination of operations and address any challenges. Well planning also takes up a significant portion of my day, often stretching until 6 pm. In the evening, I return home, balancing family responsibilities before catching up on any pending paperwork or tasks that require attention.

I believe the future of the energy industry in Africa lies in innovation, sustainability and inclusivity. My experience with deploying technologies like TerraSphere has demonstrated the potential of sustainable solutions in driving the industry forward. I envision a future where Africa continues to contribute to technological advancements, integrating digital solutions into offshore work, advancing remote operations, and moving towards autonomous drilling. Gender balance will also play a crucial role, with more women participating in and contributing to the energy sector. By embracing these innovations, we can minimize environmental impact and create a more sustainable, efficient, and inclusive energy landscape across the continent.
