Namibian lawyer-in-training Justina Erastus empowers youth across the oil and gas industry while fostering inclusion through platforms such as the Youth in Oil and Gas Summit. As Founder of the summit, Erastus has positioned youth at the forefront of Namibia’s energy development. She is recognized as one of this year’s 20 Under 40 Energy Women Rising Stars for her commitment to the industry and dedication to supporting the next generation of oil and gas leaders.

Almost two years ago, I started an exciting new role as an administrator at a small supply company in Walvis Bay. That role opened my curiosity about oil and gas. Soon after, I founded the Youth in Oil and Gas Summit, which has grown from a local event into a national platform endorsed by the African Energy Chamber, PetroFund and Namcor. I have since travelled to Cape Town, South Africa, and attended the African Energy Week as well as to Accra, Ghana as a speaker and youth advocate. Being part of initiatives that bridge energy access with social change is what I’m most proud of.

Working in a male-dominated industry meant that I had to prove myself constantly. I had focused on delivering results and building trust through collaboration. And when I faced doubt, I really leaned on preparation, on resilience, and truly reminding myself of the bigger picture of youth inclusion.
Quels conseils donneriez-vous aux jeunes femmes qui aspirent à exceller dans le secteur de l'énergie ? Y a-t-il des stratégies ou des mentalités spécifiques qui vous ont aidée à surmonter les obstacles et à atteindre votre position actuelle ?
Stay authentic. You need to know who you are and where you are headed. You do not need to change who you are to fit in. Just because you are working in a male-dominated industry, you don’t have to be less feminine. There is power in being a woman, especially a woman who defies the odds in a space that’s just too “technical”. Build knowledge, find the right mentors, and do not be afraid to ask questions. There’s no such thing as a silly question. Not asking questions is silly. Be inquisitive and learn as much as you can. Opportunities open up when you are prepared and courageous enough to take up space.

I usually start my mornings with prayer and journaling. My workday is spent between schoolwork, planning the next edition of the Summit, meeting with partners, and reviewing progress on the Summit. I try to read energy reports daily to stay updated. By evening, I try to rest, read a book, or spend time with loved ones.

I want to see more women trusted with leadership roles and more youth trusted with responsibility. My role is to keep building platforms that make the industry accessible, so others can lead and shape a sustainable future.
