Technip Energies Secures Coral Norte Contract as Mozambique LNG Expansion Accelerates

Upon completion, Coral Norte will double LNG capacity at the Coral hub to 7 million tons per annum, positioning Mozambique among Africa’s top three LNG producers.

Engineering and technology company Technip Energies, alongside consortium partners JGC Corporation and Samsung Heavy Industries, has been awarded the engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) contract for the Coral Norte FLNG project, offshore Mozambique. Awarded by Mozambique Rovuma Venture, the contract marks a major milestone in the development of the country’s offshore gas sector.

The African Energy Chamber (AEC) welcomes the contract award as a significant step forward for Mozambique’s LNG industry and Africa’s broader energy development agenda. As the continent seeks to monetize its vast natural gas resources while addressing energy poverty and industrialization ambitions, large-scale projects such as Coral Norte demonstrate the growing confidence of international investors in African energy markets, reinforcing Mozambique’s position as one of the continent’s most strategic gas hubs.

The Coral Norte FLNG facility will be deployed in Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin and is expected to produce approximately 3.6 million tons per annum (mtpa) of LNG. Developed by Mozambique Rovuma Venture – comprising partners Eni, CNPC, ENH, XRG and KOGAS – the project will effectively double production capacity at the Coral Hub to roughly 7 mtpa when combined with the existing Coral Sul FLNG facility.

The award follows a series of key project milestones over the past two years. After the Mozambican government approved the Coral Norte development plan in April 2025, the project advanced through early engineering activities before reaching a major manufacturing milestone with the launch of the FLNG hull in Geoje, South Korea, in January 2026. The definitive EPCIC award announced on June 8 now paves the way for full-scale execution ahead of planned first gas production in the second half of 2028.

Technip Energies has played a central role in Mozambique’s LNG industry since delivering Coral Sul, which entered commercial operations in November 2022 as the country’s first operational LNG facility. For Coral Norte, the company is leveraging its “design one, build many” strategy, utilizing an enhanced replica of the Coral Sul design to reduce execution risk, improve predictability and accelerate project delivery. According to Technip Energies CEO Arnaud Pieton, the approach demonstrates how standardized designs can support the efficient delivery of industrial-scale offshore projects.

“Coral Norte is exactly the type of large-scale energy investment Africa needs to unlock the full value of its natural gas resources while creating jobs, building local capacity and attracting long-term capital. This project reinforces Mozambique’s emergence as a global LNG powerhouse and demonstrates that Africa remains one of the world’s most compelling destinations for energy investment and infrastructure development,” says NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman, AEC.

Beyond Mozambique, the development carries wider significance for Africa’s energy future. The project strengthens the continent’s position as a global LNG supplier at a time of growing demand for diversified gas sources, while also supporting local content development, workforce training and supply-chain participation. Together with ongoing developments in Mozambique’s offshore and onshore LNG sectors, Coral Norte is expected to contribute to long-term economic growth, energy security and export revenues across the region.
